Concept Design

Bringing Your Vision to Life

At LA Architecture, Concept Design is where your dreams begin to take shape. In this phase, we dive deep into understanding your goals, lifestyle and site context to craft a creative framework that blends function, form and inspiration.

Our Approach

1. Discovery & Inspiration

We start with a site visit and a conversation: exploring location, light, views and your personal needs.

We compile inspirational imagery (materials, colors, spatial arrangements) into a concise mood board.

2. Spatial & Functional Studies

Preliminary bubble diagrams and massing sketches establish relationships between rooms, flow and scale.

We collaborate with you to refine adjacencies (living versus private zones, indoor/outdoor connections) until the layout resonates.

3. Concept Sketches & 3D Explorations

Hand-drawn sketches communicate overall form and key design gestures.

Initial digital models (massing studies in SketchUp/Revit) give you a sense of volume, light and materiality.

4. Materiality & Palette Direction

We present a curated selection of façade finishes, interior palettes and key architectural details.

Together, we pinpoint the character you love—whether it’s warm wood and stone or clean, minimalist surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Concept Design and why is it important?

Concept Design is the initial creative phase where we translate your ideas, needs and site context into preliminary sketches and diagrams. It sets the overall vision—defining spatial relationships, form and material direction—so that everyone shares a clear roadmap before detailed design begins.

2. How long does the Concept Design phase typically take?

Most Concept Design phases run 3–6 weeks, depending on project size and complexity. A small residential project may wrap up in about three weeks, while larger commercial or multi-unit developments can take closer to six.

3. What deliverables will I receive at the end of this phase?

You’ll get a branded Concept Design booklet including:

Preliminary material and color boards

Site analysis diagrams (sun/shadow, views, zoning)

Bubble-plan layouts showing room adjacencies

Hand sketches and 3D massing studies

4. How many revisions are included?

Concept Design is the initial creative phase where we translate your ideas, needs and site context into preliminary sketches and diagrams. It sets the overall vision—defining spatial relationships, form and material direction—so that everyone shares a clear roadmap before detailed design begins.

5. Do I need to provide anything before we start?

Yes—ideally:

Your program requirements (number and type of rooms, special features)

A site survey or surveyor’s plan

Inspiration images (Pinterest boards, magazine clippings)

6. How involved will I be in the design process?

You’re at the heart of it! We schedule two review meetings: one after the discovery and schematic bubbles, and another to review refined sketches and materials. Between meetings, we stay in close email or phone contact.

7. What if my budget constraints change during Concept Design?

We work within your budget from day one. If your budget shifts, just let us know: we’ll adjust material palettes or simplify forms to meet your financial targets without compromising the overall vision.

8. Which software do you use for 3D explorations?

We typically use SketchUp or Revit for massing models and Rhino or 3ds Max for more detailed 3D studies, depending on project needs. Hand-sketching remains central—nothing replaces the immediacy of drawing by hand.

9. Can you incorporate sustainable or “green” strategies at this stage?

Absolutely. Early integration of passive solar design, natural ventilation studies, and material life-cycle considerations ensures your project is both beautiful and environmentally responsible.

10. What happens after Concept Design is approved?

Once you sign off, we transition into Schematic Design, where we develop accurate floor plans, sections, and elevations. At that point, the broad strokes become precise drawings ready for client review and ultimately for permitting.
